Apple tarte tatin is an upside down apple tart in which the apples are caramelized in sugar and butter. It is very very delicious and goes great with french vanilla ice-cream. Below is my recipe...let me know how it turns out and how you like it!
Ingredients:
1 sheet of puff pastry (thawed)
5 Granny Smith apples
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup of salted butter
1 small egg (for egg-wash)
1 tablespoon of water
Directions:
- Pour sugar in a pot / frying pan and let completely melt on low heat
- add butter to caramelized sugar and stir in until completely melted
- Pour into a 9-in Pyrex pie dish and let cool
- beat egg and 1 tablespoon of water in a cup and place on the side
- while the caramel cools, peel apples
- cut each apple into four (make sure the cores are removed)
- place and pack apples tightly in the pie dish
- preheat oven to 375F
- unfold puff pastry on floured surface
- using a rolling pin, roll pastry sheet and place over the apples
- brush the puff pastry with egg mixure
- use a fork and poke a few holes in the pastry
- place the pie dish on a baking tray, place in pre-heated oven and bake for 35 minutes
- let the tarte tatin cool for about 15 minutes
- loosen the edges of the tatin with a knife then place a plate over the baking dish and flip it over so the caramelized apples are on top
